Devil’s Nose Train Ride Reopens

Wednesday, 23 March 2011

The recent re-opening of the Devil’s Nose section of the Ecuadorian railway system is excellent and welcome news. Once again visitors to Ecuador can enjoy the unforgettable experience of travelling by train along this thrilling and exhilarating section of railroad, known locally as the Nariz del Diablo.

The route, which zigzags its way down the edge of the majestic Andes, was constructed over 100 years ago; a truly amazing engineering feat taking into consideration the extreme geographical conditions faced.

After much government investment and months of restoration work this railway section has been repaired, renewed and now proudly re-launched.

The Devil’s Nose train ride departs from Alausi Train Station on Tuesdays through to Sundays plus bank holidays. There are 3 daily departures at 8h00, 11h00 and 15h00. The whole journey, Alausi – Silambe – Alausi, takes around 2 hours and includes a short stop off at Silambe. Here there is a small museum and railway café where a small snack can be enjoyed (included in the ticket price). The return trip costs USD$20 per adult and all reservations need to be made in advance with the Railways of Ecuador company

Why not combine this unique railway experience with a stay at the nearby Hacienda Abraspungo, a colonial property located at the foothills of the Chimborazo volcano which offers comfortable rooms and highly personalized service. Contact us for more information on our Devil’s Nose Programs which include transportation from Quito, lodging at Abraspungo and train tickets.
